What's Expected of You

As a chase crewmember, several things are expected of you. First and foremost - - and something we’ll repeat several times - - listen to your pilot and/or crew chief and do what they ask. Your balloon may be slightly different from others that look like it. Your pilot may have a different way he/she likes things done. He/She may ask you to do something differently from what’s in this information manual. ALWAYS obey your pilot. He has everyone’s safety and well being in mind, including yours.

You are part of a team. There’s a tremendous amount of team spirit among balloon crews, whether they’ve been together for years or have just met. Meet and enjoy your fellow crewmembers. Learn to work together and don’t be afraid to say “Thanks” or “May I help you?” Only through a team effort can a hot air balloon have a safe and successful flight..

Always be on time meeting up with the rest of your crew. A team missing one player is not as good as it can be. Most pilots would rather work one person short than have to scrub a flight. Don’t be that one person.

One more important thing: DO NOT SMOKE anywhere on the balloon launch field or anywhere around a balloon. Propane is heavy and hugs the ground. Also, discarded ashes often can cause grass fires.
